The ETF did not malfunction. It revealed the reality of 2x daily leverage. Flexible leverage is not a solution. It is a reframing. Consider this: if the manager is allowed to scale leverage down when volatility rises, investors are no longer holding a defined product. They are holding a discretionary mandate with an unknown exposure. The daily announcement creates an illusion of certainty. But the actual portfolio is exposed to the manager's judgment, the counterparty's risk appetite, and the operational lag between announcement and execution. The cryptocurrency markets, despite their excesses, are forcing this evolution on their rails. Traditional asset managers, meanwhile, are still repackaging the same structural flaw into a new wrapper. The lesson is straightforward: leverage is not a product feature; it is a risk-bearing capability. Until the industry designs structures that are fundamentally path-independent, or transparently priced for their variance penalty, these products will continue to destroy the unwary. Speed without direction is just volatility. And volatility, as this collapse shows, is the real enemy of leverage. Here is my forward-looking judgment: single-stock leveraged ETFs, in their current form, will not survive the next two years. The SFC's flexible leverage rule is the industry's first step toward a restructuring. The question is whether that restructuring is honest.
